SEATTLE - After falling short in back-to-back state championship games, both times against Seattle Prep, veteran faceoff specialist Miles Burdeen and the rest of the Irish are determined to change the narrative this year. Despite a slow start to the season, the team has rallied and now sits undefeated in Metro League play as they head into the playoffs.
Currently holding a 10-3 record overall and a perfect 5-0 in Metro competition, the Irish have hit their stride at the right time. Burdeen, a three-year starter, continues to be a key presence on the field and someone the coaching staff consistently trusts in crucial face-off situations. He’s embraced the team culture and serves as a strong example of following the leadership set by the captains.
“We’re all in it to win it and want to succeed,” said Burdeen. “I think our captains do a good job of setting expectations for the players and striving to make us better. Our coaches, Will and Drew Snider, are very knowledgeable about the game of lacrosse.”
The team’s early-season struggles proved to be valuable learning experiences. Rather than allowing those setbacks to define them, the Irish adopted an underdog mentality and came together as a unit, securing critical wins in Metro play. None were more significant than their victory over Seattle Prep, the very team that had ended their championship hopes the last two seasons.
“We came in with an underdog attitude and had something to prove,” Burdeen said. “After coming off a loss to Eastlake, we had to show that we’re still one of the top teams in Washington. I think everyone showed up with high energy, and we got business done against [Seattle] Prep.”
The growth and resilience of the team throughout the season haven’t gone unnoticed. Burdeen credits head coach Snider for helping the team turn adversity into progress.
“Our coach, Will Snider, has told us, ‘You learn more from the losses than the wins,’” said Burdeen.
With momentum on their side and a renewed sense of purpose, the Irish are poised to make a serious run in the postseason, and this time, they’re determined to finish the job.
