SEATTLE- The O'Dea tennis team stepped onto the courts this spring not just facing new opponents but a whole new way of playing the game. With a new head coach and some early-season struggles, the season hasn’t gone as planned, but it’s shaping the team in unexpected and positive ways.

This year, O'Dea went 0-9 in Metro League team matches and 0-45 in individual play. Despite the record, the players have shown steady growth.

“Our team this year has experienced some challenges and new coaching staff for the team, but through it this is where we have been doing well, which is that we've learned to adapt to the new style of the coach,” said senior Anbin Keen. “Something that our team needs to get better at is working on execution in our matches. I know we have a good team, but we've struggled to execute our goals and plans.”

Leading the charge this season is Coach Jennifer Friedrich Wood, who joined the O’Dea tennis program this spring. Coach Jen is a certified PTR (Professional Tennis Registry) instructor with experience coaching at Garfield and Bishop Blanchet. Her energy and belief in making sports fun for all levels have already made a noticeable impact on the team.

Even through a challenging season, players say the vibe has improved over time. “Our team's energy and attitude have changed for the better as the season went on, despite the struggling season,” Keen said.

That positive shift has helped hold the team together.

One match that really reflected that spirit was against Roosevelt.

“Joe Stair and I played a well-fought match in doubles-one position. We were outmatched, but our team chemistry kept us in the game for one of our closest matches of the year,” Keen shared. “This match especially shows the energy and brotherhood within the team, and it reflected the values of O'Dea shown on our tennis team.”

Metros: Singles 1: Phineas Petersen Doubles 1: Joseph Stair/Eli Heckinger

Due to senior prom conflicting with the first day of Metro Championships, O’Dea’s Varsity No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 did not play. Initial selections for Metros were Anbin Keen, Cormac Hummel, and Hudson White, but adjustments were made due to the conflict.
