SEATTLE – The top-seeded O’Dea Fighting Irish opened the 3A state playoffs by shutting out No. 16 Ferndale 49–0 in a one-sided first-round game. The defending state champions scored all 49 points before halftime, confirming their status as Washington’s team to beat.

O’Dea scored seven touchdowns in only 15 plays. The first drive featured a 57-yard catch and run by senior wide receiver Giulio Banchero, setting up a 12-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back J’Shaun Wilson. Junior wide receiver Ray Clark III then caught a 57-yard touchdown pass for a 14–0 lead.

Senior linebacker Timothy Sousou returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown—O’Dea’s first defensive score of the season—which energized the team.

“I was feeling excited knowing we hadn't gotten a defensive touchdown this whole season,” Sousou said. “It was really nice to be able to get the first one.”

After the interception, the Irish dominated. Wilson ran for two more touchdowns, finishing with 103 yards and three scores on four carries. Peyton Egan had a 43-yard run, and sophomore running back J’Andre Castillo added a 54-yarder to close the half. O’Dea led 49–0 at halftime. Sousou said the team entered the Ferndale game focused and determined.

“We had the mindset that time was running out and had to execute every chance we got,” Sousou said.

In the second half, O’Dea played backups while Ferndale kept most starters in. Neither team scored, but O’Dea’s huge first half secured the win.

Sousou, who missed four games earlier, is grateful to be back and focused on the playoffs. He believes the team’s effort and coaching will power another playoff run.

The Irish now prepare for Sedro-Woolley, an undefeated team seeking an upset. Sousou said the team must stay sharp for the quarterfinals.

“The mindset is to never give up or look down from the expectation to win,” Sousou said.

As O’Dea pursues another state title, Sousou says they are focusing on details, staying disciplined, and taking things step by step.

The Irish move forward with confidence after one of their best games this season.
