SEATTLE---The late afternoon sun hangs over the athletic fields used by O'Dea High School, the same places where countless student athletes have practiced, competed, and grown over the years. For Race Porter, those fields were more than just a place to play sports, they were where his mindset first took form and shaped the beginnings of his future.
Before he played college football for the Washington Huskies football team at the University of Washington or became known for his work as an entrepreneur, Porter was simply another student walking the halls at O’Dea. Like many Fighting Irish athletes, he balanced school and sports, while maintaining lessons that would stay with him long after graduation.

At O’Dea, Porter wasn’t just focused on one sport. He competed in football, basketball, and track, pushing himself in different places and learning how to adapt to new challenges. Being surrounded by talented teammates and coaches, it created an atmosphere where hard work was expected and he could not let his brothers down. “Play and work, you know, not just in the classroom, it's like everything can have a healthy balance”.
Looking back on those years, Porter credits the environment at O’Dea for helping build the mindset that would carry him forward. The expectations placed on athletes and students alike pushed him to develop discipline and accountability early on. When reflecting on that experience, Porter explained how the culture at O’Dea helped shape his work ethic and the way he approached challenges even at a young age. “I felt like the people there actually, like, cared about my growth and like, wanted to be a part of it”.
The competitive nature of O’Dea athletics also helped Porter develop resilience. Playing multiple sports meant learning how to handle pressure, and continue improving even when things didn’t go as planned. Those moments built the mental toughness that would later help him compete at the college level.
But the lessons he learned went beyond competition. O’Dea’s focus on brotherhood and teamwork played a major role in shaping how Porter approached leadership and relationships with teammates. Reflecting on that culture, Porter spoke about how the sense of brotherhood at O’Dea helped prepare him for the challenges he would face later in both athletics and life. “It forced me to, like, grow into a newer version of myself in a lot of ways”.
After graduating, Porter continued his football career at the University of Washington. What started as a walk-on opportunity eventually turned into a successful college career, where he became one of the program’s most consistent and respected players. While the competition at the collegiate level was much tougher, Porter said the habits he developed during high school helped him adjust to the higher expectations.
The discipline and routine he learned while balancing multiple sports at O’Dea translated directly into the demands of college athletics. Competition was stronger, and the margin for error was smaller but the mindset he developed earlier helped him stay focused and continue improving.

Beyond football, Porter also began exploring business and entrepreneurship. Over time, he built ventures that reflected both his interests and his personal values. The leadership and discipline he learned as a student-athlete became important tools as he navigated through a completely different type of challenge.
Porter shared that many of the same lessons he learned at O’Dea; such as accountability, and working toward long-term goals continue to guide how he approaches business today. “That is how you keep yourself accountable in your own life and being at Oday, a community that integrates that in so many ways and enforces that message”.
Despite his success after high school, Porter hasn’t forgotten where his journey began. The experiences he had at O’Dea continue to influence the way he approaches opportunities and challenges.
When thinking about the next generation of O’Dea students and athletes, Porter emphasized the importance of making the most of the opportunities available during high school. He encouraged students to embrace the culture, learn from the people around them, and stay committed to improving every day. “At O’Dea you're accountable for each other. Like you feel like you're representing something bigger”.
From competing on the fields at O’Dea to building a career beyond sports, Porter’s journey highlights how early experiences can shape a person’s path. While his achievements continue to grow, the foundation built during his high school years remains a defining part of his story.
For Porter; O’Dea wasn’t just where he went to school, it was where the mindset that fueled his success first began.
