The Work Before the Finish Line: Heath Atrosh's Road to State Glory
Updated: Oct 4
SEATTLE- While most people only see the race, senior cross-country runner Heath Atrosh’s success begins long before the starting line, built through hours of hard work when no one is watching.
For Atrosh, cross country is not just about showing up when the season begins. His preparation starts during the summer and requires him to slowly build himself back into running shape. Even when there are no meets or school practices, he still has to stay focused on preparing for the season.
“Over the summer, I take a one week break then incrementally get back to training,” Atrosh said.
That summer training helps Atrosh prepare for the long season ahead. Cross country takes endurance and consistency, meaning the work runners put in before the season can make a difference when it is time to compete. For Atrosh, that preparation has helped him enter his senior season ready to contribute to the team.
The work has also started to show in the team’s performances. Atrosh believes the team has shown improvement and potential in their last meet.
“The team had a lot of PRs. It was a good meet,” Atrosh said.
PRs, or personal records, show that runners are improving their previous best times. Even though cross country runners compete for individual times, their performances also contribute to the team. Atrosh is focused on both sides of that this season.
As a senior, he has goals that go beyond having a few good races. He wants to finish his final season by competing at one of the biggest meets possible.
“My goal is to make it to state as a team, and for my personal goal I want to qualify for state as well,” Atrosh said.
Making it to state would be a major ending to Atrosh’s senior season, but reaching that goal will require the same work he has already been putting in.
The races may be where people see the results, but the training, preparation and consistency behind the scenes are what give Atrosh the opportunity to reach the finish line.
