SEATTLE - The first time Andrew Bosa picked up a golf club at 12 years old, he knew the sport was different. There were no teammates to depend on, just him, the club, and the ball.
Now a sophomore at O’Dea, that same independence is what pushes him every time he steps onto the course.
For many high school students, afternoons are about hanging out with friends or doing homework. For Bosa, afternoons mean picking up his clubs and heading to the golf course.
Bosa started playing golf when he was about 12 years old. Right away, he enjoyed how the sport put all the pressure on him.
“I liked that it was just me out there,” he said. “I’m the only one who can make myself better.”
That challenge is what pushed him to keep playing.
When he came to O’Dea, Bosa didn’t hesitate to join the team. For him, the choice was simple.
“I love the game, and I love the people who play it, too,” he explained.
Golf gave him a way to compete while also being part of a close group.
Like any sport, golf has its tough moments. Bosa says the hardest part is moving on after a rough day on the course.
“When you have a bad round, you can’t beat yourself up,” he said. “You just have to bounce back and try to score lower the next time.”
Learning to stay calm and patient has helped him grow not only as a golfer but also as a student.

Being an athlete at O’Dea has also given him new tools to improve. He says one of the best parts of his experience is the training and guidance from the coaches.
“The support we get and the work we do with Coach P (Paxton Paynter, O’Dea’s Strength and Conditioning coach), has really helped me build confidence,” he said.
On top of that, golf has taught him how to manage his time. With practice after school and homework at night, he has learned how to balance both worlds.
Looking ahead, Bosa has set goals for himself. He hopes to qualify for the Metro championships and maybe even districts before he graduates. For him, reaching those tournaments would show how far he has come since his early days in the sport.
Andrew Bosa’s story is still being written, but it is clear that golf has already shaped who he is. Through every swing, he is learning lessons about focus, patience, and hard work. These are skills that will carry him far beyond the course.
