SEATTLE- When people talk about famous athletes from O'Dea High School, names like Paolo Banchero, Myles Gaskin, Fred Couples, Nate Burleson, and Taylor Mays are usually the first ones mentioned.

They all became stars in their sports and gained national attention. However, there is another O'Dea graduate whose story deserves just as much recognition. Mitch Johnson may not have become a famous professional athlete, but his journey from O'Dea student to head coach of the San Antonio Spurs is one of the most impressive success stories in the school's history. His story shows that leadership, hard work, and determination can take someone a long way.

Johnson attended O'Dea High School in Seattle, where he quickly became one of the top basketball players in Washington. As the team's point guard, he helped lead the Fighting Irish to two state championships and earned several awards, including All Metro League and All State teams. Basketball was also a big part of his family.

His father, John Johnson, played in the NBA and won a championship with the Seattle SuperSonics. Growing up around the game helped Mitch develop a strong understanding of basketball from a young age.

After graduating from O'Dea, Johnson attended Stanford University. There, he played four seasons of college basketball and became known as a smart and dependable player. Former Stanford coach Trent Johnson once called him "the ultimate leader, player and competitor". Even though he had a successful college career, Johnson was not selected in the NBA Draft. He continued chasing his dream by playing in the NBA Development League and overseas in Latvia.

When his playing career ended, Johnson decided to stay involved in basketball by becoming a coach. He started as an assistant coach at the University of Portland before joining the Austin Spurs, the G League affiliate of the San Antonio Spurs. Looking back on that opportunity, Johnson said, "When I took the opportunity to join the Austin Spurs over nine years ago, I had no idea that opportunity was in front of me." His hard work and dedication helped him move up through the organization until he eventually earned a position on the Spurs' NBA coaching staff.

One of the biggest influences on Johnson's coaching career was Gregg Popovich. As the longtime coach of the Spurs, Popovich is considered one of the greatest coaches in NBA history. During their years together, Popovich helped Johnson grow as a leader and coach. Johnson later said that Popovich provided "the balance of guidance and independence." In other words, Popovich gave advice when it was needed but also trusted Johnson to make his own decisions. This mentorship helped Johnson become the person he is today.

Johnson is now leading the Spurs on one of the biggest stages in sports. In his first full season as head coach, he guided San Antonio to the 2026 NBA Finals. From winning championships at O'Dea to coaching in the NBA Finals, Johnson's journey has been built on leadership, perseverance, and hard work.
