More Than a Race: How O’Dea XC Builds Character

SEATTLE- What started as a bet to beat his friends turned into a sport that helped shape his mindset, friendships, and approach to school and everyday life. O'Dea cross country runner, Heath Atrosh has developed a passion for running that goes beyond competing. From qualifying for state, to becoming more focused in the classroom, cross country has helped shaped the way he approaches challenges both on and off the course.

“I first got into cross-country as a bet to see if I could beat some of my friends who did XC at the time,” Atrosh said.

What began as a competition eventually became an important part of his life, teaching him lessons that go beyond the sport itself.

Atrosh’s biggest accomplishments as a runner have been making it to state and recently breaking the school record for the 5k (15:31). Reaching that takes dedication, consistent training, and the ability to push through difficult workouts.

Although individual achievements are important, Atrosh says one of his benefits of cross country is having teammates to train alongside.

“My favorite part about being on the team would be not running or training alone because it is difficult to train by yourself,” Atrosh said.

“Being a part of O’Dea sports has affected the people I surround myself with because I like to be around people who are motivated and look for success,” Atrosh said. Being around motivated teammates has helped him value hard work and build relationships with people who share similar goals.

Although Atrosh’s journey began with a bet between friends, cross country has become an experience that has shaped his character. Qualifying for state and breaking a school record remains as some of his biggest accomplishments, but the discipline, motivation, and focus he has gained along the way are just as meaningful.

For Atrosh, running is no longer just about beating someone else to the finish line. It is also about becoming a better person along the way.
