SEATTLE - From Defense to Offense: David Schwerzel’s Hard Work Pays Off
Last season, David Schwerzel was known as a strong and reliable defensive lineman for O’Dea football. But this year, he’s taken on something new, playing on both sides of the ball as a tight end, too. It’s a big change that didn’t just happen overnight.
“I wanted to help the team in more ways,” Schwerzel said. “I spent a lot of time in the offseason lifting, running, and working on my hands. I wanted to prove I could do more than just play defense.”
During the summer, Schwerzel focused on improving his speed and catching skills so he could handle the tight end position.
Schwerzel said, “Coaches quickly noticed I had been in the lab in the past off-season.”
Playing both positions has challenged David to grow as a player. On defense, he’s used to attacking the play, but on offense, he’s had to learn patience and timing. Still, he’s handled the change with determination.
“Watching him switch from defense to offense is inspiring,” said teammate, junior Joe Benavides. “
Schwerzel’s goal for the season is simple: to keep improving and to help his team win games. “It’s all about the team,” he said. “I just want to do my part and keep getting wins.”
His story shows what can happen when a player puts in the work. By training hard all offseason and trusting the process, David Schwerzel turned himself into a key player on both sides of the field.
