SEATTLE- As Cyrus Batingan walks onto the field for his first snap as a varsity starter, he receives advice from the older players who mentored him. They taught him how to stay calm, read the field, and trust in himself. The leadership from his teammates through the years built the confidence he carries now. All that guidance has led to this moment, his first start under the lights.
Batingan waited three years for this chance. For most of that time, he was behind the starters, though he got first-string snaps in games here and there.
“I mean, the past three years I have been second string,” Batingan said. “Being able to go learn behind great people like Jonah [Martin] and Finn [Greenan] really prepared me.”
Martin, an O’Dea graduate, set the standard.
“Jonah set a good example of what an O’Dea lineman should be,” Batingan said. “He was a really good leader on the line as well.”
Greenan, another O’Dea alum, shaped him in a different way.
“He really taught me the plays,” Batingan said. “He always stayed there a little longer to help me.”

Now it’s Batingan who has the spotlight.
“It means a lot to me since I know I have a big role to fill and the coaches expect a lot from me,” he said. “This starting job got me watching film 24/7. I’m always watching film, always asking questions.”
His preparation shows his commitment, but his growth isn’t only about studying. It’s about becoming a mentor. “Being a leader,” Batingan said. “That’s what I want to improve most.”
At the center, leadership naturally comes with the job. Every play begins in his hands, and his teammates count on him to stay composed and focused. It’s a responsibility that Batingan accepts.
“It means everything to have the chance to prove myself,” he said. “I know I can handle it.”
For O’Dea, the offensive line has always been the backbone of the offense, and the center is at the heart of it. With Batingan stepping in, the tradition continues. His performance will be measured not just by stats, but by how he controls the line and leads the offense.
The season is long, and his skills will be tested. But after years of patience, preparation, and growth, Cyrus Batingan is ready for the challenge. His moment under the lights was just the beginning.
